If you know anyone in Elgin, Middlesex or London that deserves recognition for their contribution to the community, then now is your chance to nominate them.
MP Karen Vecchio and MPP Jeff Yurek are holding an awards ceremony to recognize people who have made the area a better place to live in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday.
“I think it’s an opportunity to reflect upon those in our community that have made it the best place to live in Canada, and the fact that we’re celebrating the 150th birthday of Canada it fits the moment to celebrate those that make our community a bright star,” Yurek said.
Anyone can nominate an individual or an organization for the honour in one of 15 categories that range all the way from agriculture to first responders and entrepreneurs.
“It’s just not one particular segment of our community that makes Elgin-Middlesex strong. It’s the fact that we’re a diverse range of people and qualities that we need to celebrate and I believe these categories cover that range,” Yurek said.
There will be 150 people recognized at the ceremony, which will take place on Sept. 10 at the Big Top in St. Thomas.
“Too often people go unnoticed or there’s no celebration of the accomplishments they have made that makes Elgin-Middlesex-London a bright place to live. And this is our opportunity, celebrating Canada’s 150 and Ontario’s 150, that we can celebrate those people and honour them for what they have contributed to our community,” Yurek said.
Each award recipient will be given a special coin at the ceremony that Yurek and Vecchio hope will be a family friendly event.
“We’re hoping it’s just a fun event, a family atmosphere where we’re celebrating not only our country but each other and we make Elgin-Middlesex-London a beautiful place to live,” Yurek said.
Nominations are open to residents of Elgin, Middlesex and London only and are due July 24. For more information and a nomination package, go to www.karenvecchiomp.ca.
