MPP Yurek’s letter to TVDSB regarding need for AEDs in all schools

Mr. Matt Reid, Chair
Thames Valley District School Board
P.O. Box 5888
London, ON  N6A 5L1

Dear Mr. Reid and Trustees,

I am writing to the board today regarding the placement of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in all the schools throughout the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB).

AEDs save lives, and in fact, the Heart and Stroke Foundation created a partnership with the government a few years ago to place an AED in all schools.  However, TVDSB was not a participant.

It is my understanding that the TVDSB currently does not have a policy in place for the acceptance and storage of AEDs.  The decision to allow AEDs in the schools is left up to the principals’ discretion.  I understand that many schools have been offered a donation of an AED with support in ongoing maintenance and training.

Mr. Reid, the inaction by the school board has created a gap in the safety for our children.  Back in 2015, I filled a previous gap in our system with the passing of Ryan’s Law which allows students with asthma to carry their reliever inhaler.  It is time for the TVDSB to fill this gap and create a policy to have an AED in every school within the district.

I request that the TVDSB develop a policy to install AEDs in all schools across the board as soon as possible for the safety of our children.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
