Statement from Ontario PC Health Critic Jeff Yurek on National Eating Disorders Awareness Week:

“This week marks the national Hands Up for Eating Disorder Awareness Week.  This week is an opportunity for Ontarians to learn, support and discuss the needs of those struggling with an eating disorder.   It is a time to shed light on dangerous myths and promote prevention.

Eating disorders can develop in anyone regardless of age, race, socioeconomic status, gender or ability and has the highest mortality rate among all psychiatric illnesses.  Unfortunately, since Ontario does not have a system for tracking those suffering from eating disorders, there is no information as to the number of sufferers or the times people wait for treatment.  Too many people are unable to access the treatment they need.  Ontario can do better.

I commend the National Initiative for Eating Disorders, all of the organizations, volunteers and healthcare professionals for their advocacy on increasing awareness.”
