Statement from Ontario PC Health Critic Jeff Yurek on the OMA Charter Challenge
TORONTO – Today the Ontario Medical Association officially launched its challenge under the Canadian Charter of Right and Freedoms against the Liberal Government.
This challenge is being filed after the Liberal Government imposed unilateral cuts to physician services on October 1, 2015. At the expense of Ontario’s patients, the Wynne Liberals have cut $815 million from physician services.
“It’s unfortunate that the Liberal Government has forced doctors in Ontario to take legal action because the government is unable to negotiate to reach a fair agreement for doctors that doesn’t compromise patient care,” stated Ontario PC Critic of Health, Jeff Yurek, Elgin-Middlesex-London. “Unfortunately, the Liberal Government’s refusal to work with Ontario’s doctors will only hurt patients. The physician perspective is critical to modernizing our health care system so that patients get the care they need, and deserve.”
“Ontario is blessed with dedicated front line caregivers, yet regrettably these cuts to front line health care services are a blatant attempt by the Wynne Liberals to clean up their fiscal mess. Ontario PC Caucus believes that Ontarians deserve a government that invests responsibly in frontline health care workers and makes patient-centered care a priority,” noted Yurek.
