MPPs Yurek and Elliott Discuss Mental Health Policy

ST THOMAS – Today, MPPs Jeff and Yurek and Christine Elliott hosted a number of mental health service providers and other stakeholders from Elgin and Middlesex County to discuss the future of mental health policy in Ontario.  The meeting was held at the Elgin-Business Resource Centre.

Ms. Elliott, a long-time advocate for mental health causes, is currently the PC Critic for Mental Health Reform in addition to being the party’s deputy leader.  She most recently authored a policy paper entitled A Healthier Ontario.

The paper envisions a greater integration of mental health services with the overall health system.  This vision is laid out in recommendation 7 and reads as follows:

“Treat mental health as equal in importance to physical health. Ensure fragmented elements of adult and children’s mental health and addictions treatment in Ontario are integrated into a coherent province-wide plan. Recognize children’s mental health as part of the health care system. Better integrate the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions from depression to dementia with the physical health conditions that frequently occur in the same patients, at the same time.”

To read A Healthier Ontario and the PC Party’s other policy discussion papers, go to:

“We must recognize the ubiquity of mental illness and continue to dismantle the stigmas surrounding it.  To ensure people receive the supports they require, we need to view mental illness in the context of overall health.  If that is the premise we begin with, then we can better integrate mental health services into a health system that treats people as one patient and not a collection of afflictions.” – Jeff Yurek, MPP Elgin-Middlesex-London

“The Ontario PC Party considers mental health a priority.  We will treat mental health as equally important as physical health by creating a simple, accessible and coherent system.  By building capacity in Ontario we can care for our youth close to home, and ensure that those suffering in the shadows aren’t forgotten.” – Christine Elliott, MPP Whitby-Oshawa
