YUREK: SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE AT THE ELGIN MIDDLESEX DETENTION CENTRE

(St. Thomas,ON) – This week has seen tensions at the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre rise to new heights as inmates refused to return to their cells as a form of protest against the facility’s deplorable conditions.  Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek says he is not surprised by the week’s events as he has been warning the Liberal government of the problems for months now.

Last November, Mr. Yurek and PC Critic for Community Safety and Correctional Services Bob Bailey did a full tour of the facility.  The facility has garnered attention for its overcrowding and poor conditions.

“It was an eye-opening experience when I toured the centre with Mr. Bailey,” said Yurek, “when you actually see the whole facility, you realize just how bad conditions have gotten for the guards and inmates.  It’s untenable and shameful that something hasn’t been done.”

Mr. Yurek criticized the Liberal government for letting conditions deteriorate so drastically.  In December, Yurek submitted an Order Paper Question to the Ministry asking how they intended to implement the recommendations from two separate conducted over the past three years.

“Unfortunately, the response gave no definitive answer or timeline.  It’s indicative of the Liberals approach to things.  We need action now.  The conditions at Elgin-Middlesex-London continue to deteriorate and it puts lives at risk.”
